A Poetic Suggestion

May 17, 2023

My solo exhibition “A Poetic Suggestion” (“Mekana Şiirsel Bir Öneri” in Turkish) opened on April 27th, 2023 at Galeri Bosfor in Istanbul, Turkey and will be on view until May 31st. From creating the ceramic sculpture to deciding how to display the pieces in the gallery this exhibition has been such a fun adventure. The team at Galeri Bosfor was amazing and the show would not have come together as perfectly as it did without them!! I wish you will be able to see the show in person, but if not I hope this post will help you feel like you have!!

I also took a video of the exhibition which you can watch below:

If you would like to learn more about the work and the ideas that went into making the work, please keep reading. I have included the press releases (in both English and Turkish) below:

A Poetic Suggestion

27.0431.05.2023

Galeri Bosfor welcomes Yasha Butler’s  A Poetic Suggestion from April 27th to May 31th. In her first solo show in Istanbul, Yasha showcases her minimalist, elegant, and organic ceramic work.

From her beginnings as a designer and interior architect, Yasha shifted her focus to art with a primary interest in ceramics. In her work, she seeks simplicity by balancing what is essential, necessary, and understated with a delicate sense of beauty. While working as an interior architect, she sought to create calm and inviting environments. This perspective informs her art as she turns to clay to make spaces more vibrant and meaningful. The artist’s vessels, with earthy textures and muted tones evoke the contradiction of a contemporary artifact. Her sculptural approach avoids any overt historical context, creating a sense of timelessness.

A Poetic Suggestion presents forms that calm the environment, creating soft lines and moments of focus. Her work conveys the reduced form and subtlety of an irregular, natural, imperfect, and undeniably handmade object.  The clay form communicates a calm moment of reflection for the beholder.  Yasha creates beauty and balance by undermining the expected geometry of the piece. Her work is evolutionary, producing new forms in the footsteps of those that came before.

In her own words, Yasha seeks to balance nature with the human creation. “I create art to help us pause and take a break. My work takes cues from nature, yet there are also marks of the human hand. They evoke ancient artefacts, yet they also embody a contemporary sensibility. The pieces feel familiar yet also of faraway lands. My hope is that these qualities make it hard for our minds to pinpoint exactly where in space and time these pieces should exist, bringing us into a moment of meditative contemplation. Possibly even bringing us back to the moment of the initial singularity, reminding us how we are all connected.”

Mekâna Şiirsel Bir Öneri

27.0431.05.2023
